About/Political Activities and achievement:
Paswan started his political career in 1969 as a member of Samyukta Socialist Party. He was elected as an MLA from the reserved constituency in that year. He appointed as the general secretary of Lok Dal in the year 1974. Paswan was arrested at the time when former prime minister Indira Gandhi declared emergency in India and he spent that period in jail. When he was released in 1977, he immediately joined the Janata Party. Paswan made his entry into Lok Sabha in 1977 on the Janata Party ticket. He won the elections from Hajipur constituency with a record margin and his name was registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. He won the subsequent elections of 1980, 1984, 1989, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2014. Paswan was the first Dalit leader to join NDA again. He earlier left the party after the 2002 Gujarat riots. The LJP leader is now the Dalit face of the Modi government. After being appointed as the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in the Modi cabinet, Paswan said that his priority is to ensure efficiency in public distribution system and consolidate the functioning of the Food Corporation of India. He lost the Lok Sabha elections after forming an alliance with Lalu Prasad's RJD. His decision to keep away from Congress turned out to be wrong. As a result, he decided to dump both RJD and Congress and finally joined BJP. With the latest win, Paswan has been elected to the Lok Sabha for the ninth time. Paswan has served as a Union Minister under six Prime Ministers. He became the Union Minister of Labour and Welfare in the V.P. Singh government. While in the office, he urged the government to extend reservations for Sheduled Castes in the employment sector. He also brought to forefront the demands of the Dalits. Under the NDA government, he was appointed as the Railway Minister and finally shifted to Coal ministry in 2001. He formed the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) in 2000. Under UPA government, Paswan was the minister in Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Ministry of Steel.
